About Jakhau Port
Jakhau Port, also known as Jakhau Harbour, is a fair-weather anchorage port in the Kutch district of Gujarat, operated by the Gujarat Maritime Board. Located on Godia Creek in the Gulf of Kutch, about 12 km from Jakhau village and 120 km from Bhuj, it is one of the oldest ports in the region. Originally a traditional trading hub, it has evolved into a combined fishing harbour and coastal cargo terminal, with modernization carried out in 2001.
The port features a 1,260-metre wharf with a large backup area and can handle small vessels at berth, while larger ships anchor offshore about 7.5 nautical miles away. Cargo operations are mainly conducted via barges, particularly for bulk salt, which is the port’s primary export. Fishing boats can access the jetty during high tide, and the port operates seasonally from mid-September to mid-May, closing during the monsoon.
Handling around 545,000 tonnes of cargo annually, Jakhau mainly supports salt exports along with a significant fishing industry. Plans are in place to develop a modern integrated fishery harbour to accommodate over 1,400 vessels. Its strategic location on Gujarat’s northwest coast also supports regional fishing, coastal trade, and offshore logistics, with nearby connectivity to Naliya by road, rail, and air.
