About Kamarajar Port (Ennore Port)
Kamarajar Port, formerly known as Ennore Port, is a deep-water seaport located about 20 km north of Chennai in Tamil Nadu along the Bay of Bengal. Commissioned in 2001, it was India’s first corporatized major port, originally established as Ennore Port Limited under the Companies Act, 1956, with the Government of India as its sole shareholder. Renamed in 2017 in honour of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, the port now operates as Kamarajar Port Limited (KPL), a subsidiary of Chennai Port Authority.
The port has a cargo handling capacity of 57.44 MMTPA across nine operational berths, each designed for specialized functions. These include dedicated coal berths for TANGEDCO, a common user coal terminal with Capesize vessel capability, an LNG terminal operated by IOCL, liquid cargo terminals for POL and LPG, automobile export facilities with large storage capacity, a container terminal developed by Adani, and a bulk terminal handling minerals and other commodities. The port also offers bunker fuel supply and modern logistics infrastructure.
In terms of performance, KPL handled 45.28 MMT of cargo in FY 2023–24, along with significant container traffic and strong financial results. The following year saw milestones such as LNG crossing 1 MMT and increased coal handling. Ongoing development projects include a major dredging program to enable Capesize vessels at all berths, expansion plans supported by large-scale investments, and the addition of new berths under PPP models, reinforcing the port’s role as a key maritime hub in India.
