About Hazira Port
Hazira Port, also known as Surat Port or Hazira (Surat) Port, is a deep-water, all-weather, direct-berthing multi-cargo port located on the Hazira peninsula, approximately 25 km west-southwest of Surat in Gujarat, on the Gulf of Khambhat at coordinates 21 degrees 05 minutes North, 72 degrees 38 minutes East. The port was originally developed by the Essar Group as a captive port to serve the Essar Steel (now ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, AM/NS India) steel plant at Hazira. The port authority is Hazira Port Private Limited (HPPL), a Shell Energy India subsidiary. HPPL operates the port infrastructure and the LNG import terminal, while non-LNG cargo facilities are operated by Adani Hazira Port Limited (AHPL) under a sub-concession agreement with HPPL. AHPL is a subsidiary of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ).
The Hazira LNG import terminal, operated by Shell Energy India (a joint venture between Shell Gas B.V. and TotalEnergies Gaz Electricite Holdings France), is one of India's oldest and most established LNG import facilities, operational since April 2005 with an initial investment of approximately USD 700 million (over Rs 3,000 crore). The terminal has an initial capacity of 5 MTPA (Phase 1A), expandable to 10 MTPA. AHPL operates three dry bulk cargo berths, two container jetties and three multipurpose berths in the non-LNG port area at Hazira. The bulk berths accommodate Panamax and Capesize bulk carriers at up to 14 metres draft through the mechanised integrated conveyor system. The port has covered and open storage areas of significant capacity. Total annual cargo capacity at AHPL was reported at approximately 30 million tonnes across its six operating berths in the 2020 APSEZ annual report. The port handles coal, steel, gypsum, sulphur, fluorspar, cement, fertilisers, agribulk, chemicals, petroleum products, containers and project cargo in addition to LNG.
In January 2025, Hazira Port revised its vessel turnaround policy to require vessel readiness for sailing within two hours of cargo operations completion, alongside berth idling charges to optimise productivity. The Hazira liquid terminal achieved a single-day record of 21,645 kilolitres handled across 734 tankers in September 2025. Container import dwell time at Hazira improved by 41% as of April 2024 following logistics upgrades. The Hazira industrial zone, which the port serves, hosts AM/NS India (one of India's largest steel plants), Larsen and Toubro's modular fabrication yard, ONGC's Hazira processing plant, Air Products, Indian Oil and a dense cluster of petrochemical, chemical and engineering manufacturing facilities, described as India's largest industrial cluster. Road connectivity to NH-53 and NH-48 and rail connectivity through Surat junction on the Western Railway main line provide the port with strong multimodal hinterland access to north India, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.
