About Dhamra Port
Dhamra Port is a deep-water, all-weather, multi-user, multi-cargo port located in Bhadrak district, Odisha, on the Bay of Bengal at coordinates 20 degrees 49 minutes 24 seconds North, 86 degrees 57 minutes 46 seconds East, approximately 7 km from Dhamra town and positioned on India's east coast between Haldia and Paradip. The port is operated by Dhamra Port Company Limited (DPCL), a 100% subsidiary of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ), which acquired the port in 2014. DPCL was originally formed as a 50:50 joint venture between Larsen and Toubro and Tata Steel, who signed the original concession agreement with the Government of Odisha in April 1998. The port is developed under a 34-year BOOST (Build, Own, Operate, Share and Transfer) concession comprising 4 years of construction and 30 years of operation.
Dhamra Port is one of India's deepest ports, with a channel depth of 17.5 metres, an 18 km approach channel, and a design capability to handle Super Capesize vessels up to 180,000 DWT at 18 metres draft with maximum LOA of 290 metres and maximum beam of 47 metres. The port is protected from Bay of Bengal waves and currents by barrier islands, which improve operational conditions. DPCL currently operates six berths and a rapid-loading silo. The mechanised dry bulk berths are equipped with grab ship unloaders capable of 2,800 tonnes per hour, making Dhamra one of the highest-throughput bulk discharge terminals on India's east coast. The port has covered and open storage areas with large capacity for dry bulk, including coal stockyards. The rated cargo handling capacity is 46.08 MMTPA as of FY 2024-25, with actual annual throughput of approximately 43 MMT in FY 2023-24. Cargo types include thermal coal, coking coal, iron ore, limestone, chrome ore, containers, steel products and project cargo, plus LNG handled through the separate Dhamra LNG Terminal Private Limited.
